Abstract

Heart Failure represents the final pathway for a large number of cardiovascular diseases and has a high prevalence as well as high morbidity and mortality. Thromboembolic events correspond to a significant portion of the morbidity related to the syndrome. Few studies have evaluated the occurrence of thrombotic and embolic events in patients with heart failure submitted to necropsy. Thus we seek to investigate the occurrence of thromboembolic events in heart failure patients submitted to necropsy.It is a retrospective and cross-sectional analysis of consecutive cases of heart failure patients undergoing autopsy at the Heart Institute of the Hospital das Clinicas, Medical School, University of São Paulo. We will select patients aged 18 years or more undergoing autopsy since January 1, 2000 with one of the following diagnoses in the necropsy report: heart failure, cardiogenic shock, or cardiomyopathy, caused by primary or secondary disorders.We intend to study the frequency of thrombosis and embolism, the association between thromboembolic events and epidemiological, clinical and morphological variables and the occurrence of discrepancies between diagnoses in vivo and post-mortem of thromboembolic events.We expect data from this study may offer subsidy to better diagnosis and treatment of heart failure patients.
