Abstract

Projects to better understand the morphology of Paca (Cuniculus paca), the second largest rodent of the Brazilian fauna, has been developed at the laboratory of Anatomy in collaboration with the wild animal sector, both from the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (FCAV/UNESP) in Jaboticabal. This sector is registered by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) as an experimental breeding. These animals have aroused the interest of the researches to find new experimental models and especially to establish the rational economic exploitation and consequent preservation of the species, because the meat is very tasty giving high zootechnical potential. However, there is a lack of detail information on the morphology of Paca. In this way, this study aims to describe the macroscopical and microscopical elements of the thyroid gland and to establish the topography of this which organ whose hormonal importance refers to the control of basal metabolism and it is the only endocrine gland to be able to accumulate their secretory product.
