Abstract

This project proposes the study of identities and images, on Brazil and Paraguay, carried by two major newspapers - O Estado de São Paulo (Brazil) and La Tribuna (Paraguay) - during the diplomatic controversy regarding the border dispute in the region of Saltos das Sete Quedas/ Saltos do Guairá between 1964 and 1966. The Brazilian foreign policy, with the design of a hydroelectric plant (now Itaipu) that take advantage of the energy potential of the heels in Paraná River, raised the diplomatic tension with the neighboring state. From the coverage that these newspapers made about the case of heels, plan to study as the source and object, the newspaper La Tribuna and O Estado de São Paulo, including how they mobilized/ reinforced identities, recovered images of Brazil and Paraguay and so defended their political projects.
