Abstract

In the Veterinary Medicine practiced in Brazil, away from the large urban centers, the electrocardiogram (ECG) is used for the diagnosis of the conduction defects, arrhythmias and for evaluates the risk of heart disease. The changes in the ECG waves may suggest the heart chambers increase, and when the P-wave duration exceeds 0.04 s (in small dogs) is characterized the P mitrale, a finding highly related with left atrial enlargement. This project aims to evaluate the cardiovascular system of small dogs, through physical examination, measurement of noninvasive blood pressure, ECG and echocardiogram (ECHO); trying to relate the P-wave duration, obtained from the digital ECG (in DII, 50 mm/s and 1 cm = 1 mV), with the dimensions of the left atrium, checked in ECHO (mode B, right parasternal axis), including the determination of the AE:AO. For proper cardiovascular evaluation of dogs are needed more information about P mitrale and their relationship with the left atrial enlargement and cardiovascular disease.
