Winnicott's facilitating environment and it's relation with postpartum depression

Abstract

During pregnancy, a woman can live a unique experience, with rich but very complex transformations. The modifications that occur in a woman's life can make her susceptible to some mood disorders, like the postpartum depression that, beyond impairing a woman's health, can also afect the quality of the mother-infant relationship.Taking this in consideration, we can then notice the importance of studying the environment that surrounds the pregnant woman and the mother because it, if sufficiently good, can work as a factor of protection agains the depression, besides facilitating the development of the maternal care. Our objective is to realize a study of the environmental issues that surround the new mothers and to investigate if those women show postpartum depression symptoms. To develop the study it will be used as corpus a semi-structured interview, and the Edimburg Postnatal Depression Scale, having as interviewees women from five different Basic Health Centers (UBS) in Assis, São Paulo. Through the analyse of the interviews, this study proposes to think about the psycological fields found, using the theory of Psychoanalysis, specially the concept of facilitating environments proposed by Winnicott, taking in consideration the importance of a sufficiently good in the promotion of the new mother's health.
