Abstract

This research project aims to investigate the architectural Restoration as a design activity, relating it to the difficulties and limitations of Architecture and Urbanism on the application of methodological requirements to acknowledge built history and cultural heritage materiality. We enphasize the analysis of conceptual precepts developed by Piero Sanpaolesi, main name of the "Florentine School" that, on the italian postwar, contributed substantially to the discussions and the development of the Restoration as conservation Science. By investigating the methodological principles of "operability" , "handcrafting" and "diagnosis", developed by the historian, architect and professor, it aims to investigate the gradual formulation of a multidisciplinar method that seek to combine the design knowledge and integral education of architects towards responsable interventions on architectural heritage. With these studies, also related to evaluation of national cases, we intend to reflect on the methodological qualities of contemporary restoration projects, and to shed discussions about a complex phase of Restoration discipline.
