Abstract

There is an increasing demand from the society for cleaner products and services. In this context, green computing has gained a lot of attention in the past few years. In particular, datacenters used by services like Google and Facebook consume a lot of energy. Due to this amount of energy consumed, several companies started to build "green" datacenters, which are totally, or at least partially, powered by renewable sources of energy. The use of renewable energy brings interesting issues to be explored both in software and hardware. In this scenario, this document describes a research project to be developed in a year period, starting in July 2015, at Rutgers University, under the supervision of Prof. Thu D. Nguyen. There are two main research topics covered in this proposal: (1) power and performance characterization of ARM-based servers; and (2) power estimation and management in a green datacenter. (AU)
