Abstract

Sandflies are important vectors of American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL). Females are the only that practice hematophagy, a necessary condition for the occurrence of maturation of their ovaries, which enable them as pathogen vectors. About 150 of more than 500 species need the male specimen for the specific determination. The existence of indistinguishable species is a major impediment to the progress of taxonomy and systematic of this insect group, and of fundamental importance for planning control and surveillance actions. In this context, Psychodopygus genus has a large quantity of vectors of LTA and displays species with indistinguishable females. The Chagasi series features two species of great importance in the transmission of Leishmania braziliensis, P. complexus and P. wellcomei, and other four species, all with indistinguishable females. Thus, the aim of our study is to investigate through different taxonomic tools (linear and geometric morphometric, morphology and Barcoding), species that occur in Brazil: Psychodopygus complexus, P. wellcomei, P. chagasi, P. squamiventris maripaensis and P. squamiventris squamiventris, including LTA vectors, aiming to improve the taxonomy of the genus Psychodopygus series chagasi.
