Abstract Tropical forests are complex adaptive systems and can be investigated/managed from the perspective of complexity science. This approach opens the possibility to investigate the ecological attributes of forests recognizing, at the same time, the existing feedbacks with the socio-economic andgovernance systems. Therefore, it's an improvement over the previously proposed frameworks for the evaluation of socioecological systems, such as the Social-Ecological Systems Framework (SESF). This proposal aims to improve the models developed in two previous projects that used complex systems modeling tools, especially agent based modeling (ABM), to investigate community management of natural resources and the diffusion of agricultural innovations in aMaroon social-ecological system in the Ribeira Valley (SP,Brazil). | |
