Abstract

This research aims at the study of the divine epithets in Pausanias' work, an author from the second century A.D, who wrote a touristic guide of Greece. His work also offers enough to consider a deeper study of the Greek religious cult, better understood due to the divine epithets provided by the author in his description of the Greek districts. Bearing this in mind, all the epithets in the Description of Greece will be listed and classified exhaustively and, regarding such classification, in order to attest its veracity, the epithets will also be analyzed. Furthermore, other sources, such as literary or epigraphic, will be taken into consideration as well, along with Pausanias' own interpretation of those epithets and their respective myths and cults, based on his own observation.
