Abstract

This research project analyses the issue of the formation of the Antarctic international regime known as the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS), covering from the VI International Geography Congress in London, 1895, to the signature of the Antarctic Treaty (AT) in Washington, 1959.Based on the lack of systematized and theoretical based studies of International Relations related to Antarctica of that period, this project propose as a research hypothesis that the generation of the agreement included the combination of strategic power dimensions whit economic interests and ideological-cognitive issues, that make the agreement possible. With a qualitative methodology of process tracing, justification for that research could be found in two orders of needs. First, on the lack of in-deep theoretical analyses and the preeminence of realists or liberal explanation on the TA agreement, that marks the necessity of a better understanding of that process. And secondly, the need to comprehend the actual conditions that lead to the conformation of a highly efficient regime, as a way to contribute to current or future institutional designs. (AU)
