Abstract

The family Scyliorhinidae is the most diverse family of sharks with at least 16 genera and 160 species. Belonging to this family, the genus Scyliorhinus have 15 valid species, with varied color patterns and very similar external morphology. Such patterns are used extensively in taxonomic studies and identification of species of the genus; however, many questions are found in relation to the definition and interpretation of the enormous variation found in individuals of the same species and the distinction of apparently similar patterns in individuals of different species. Data on the lateral line canals, copulatory organs, skulls and other internal anatomical components are scarce, invalidating comparisons between species. Moreover, the definition of the genus presents inconsistencies, since a number of reallocations, redescriptions and sinonimizations of the nominal species is found in the literature. Due to the need for a broad morphological and taxonomic revision of the genus Scyliorhinus, this study aims to conduct an internal and external anatomical analysis of members of this genus, identifying the characters that define the taxon Scyliorhinus and describing the anatomical patterns, meristics and general and exclusive aspects of these species, suggesting synonyms, describing possible new species and elucidating morphological patterns that may eventually help build a phylogeny of the genus.
