A disappearance semantics in the southern cone: studies on discourse signs of the relations between children and authoritarian regimes

Abstract

Based on the rule of interdiscourse and the principle of global semantics, we'll mobilize the notion of discourse competence developed by the linguist Dominique Maingueneau (2008) within the French tradition of discourse analysis, seeking to contribute more broadly to the production of studies considering the configuration of the world for a child when several fundamental semes are hidden in silence and unspoken. The study focuses on narratives of the period during which the military dictatorship took place in Brazil, Argentina and Chile, outlined the perspective of children who can barely understand the events surrounding them. As the object of this analysis, three movies will be examined three films: the Brazilian O ano em que meus pais saíram de casa, directed by Cao Hamburger, 2006; argentinean Kamchatka by Marcelo Piñeyro, 2002 and the chilean Machuca, by Andrés Wood, 2004. The selected movies have a noticeable relationship because narrate how three children, Mauro, Harry and Pedro Machuca, respectively, put what happens in their respective countries, dominated by authoritarian governments in context and how they make sense of what surrounds them without much explanation from their parents and other adults, who however say a great deal in their silence.
