Abstract

Neotropical deer's play important roles in ecosystem sustainability and health. Pathological research, as well as, causal agents, are a critical part of their conservation research programs. Wild animals and in particularly deer, have an important role in infectious disease transmission and dissemination that in some cases are relevant to human, pet and production health. This project aims to identify and characterize the cause of death, pathological processes (macroscopic and microscopic) and correlated molecular aspects in deer specimens received at the Laboratory of Wildlife Comparative Pathology (LAPCOM/VPT), FMVZ-USP. Therefore, will be analyzed biological samples (formalin-fixed tissues and paraffin-embedded) of deer kept to LAPCOM from 1995 to 2014, and new cases by July 2016. General information data, necropsy reports and histopathology reports recollected will generate frequency tables; and on this basis, we will determine the cause of death within those established by Montali, 1991: infectious process; suspected infectious process; not infectious process; euthanasia; and indeterminate. Cases where additional diagnostic techniques are required, will be subjected to immunohistochemistry, molecular biology and electron microscopy protocols. We hope this research will bring insight on the health of the Neotropical deer's received at LAPCOM and thus contribute both to neotropical wildlife pathology and neotropical deer conservation. (AU)
