Abstract

Schistosomiasis is caused by worms of genus Schistosoma. It has become one of the most fatal verminose worldwide, affecting more than 200 million people in poor neighborhoods without sanitation, being the worst neglected diseases on the planet. Schistosomiasis treatment and control are dependent upon a single drug, praziquantel, which is on the market for over three decades. Due to its continuous use in monotherapy, conducted throughout this time, evidence of drug resistance was evaluated. Therefore, new chemotherapies are urgently needed. Carvacrol is a substance present in essential oils from several species of medicinal and aromatic plants. It has been widely used both as a food or food additive in the food industry for long time. In recent years, its multiple functions were well studied in different fields and Carvacrol has shown several biological activities, including against the Schistosoma mansoni parasite, the causative agent of schistosomiasis. However, Carvacrol is an insoluble compound, making its use unfeasible as a drug. One way to increase the bioavailability of these drugs is to encapsulate their compounds in controlled release forms, such as cyclodextrin nanoparticles, capable of improve the pharmacocinetics and dosage of substances. The proposed work aims to structurally characterize the Carvacrol and Carvacrila complexed in cyclodextrin by diffraction X-rays analysis, in order to establish the structure-activity relationships of these compounds in the treatment of schistosomiasis.
