Abstract

The present research project aims to analyze the regional competitiveness of the sugar cane agribusiness in the mesoregion of Triângulo Mineiro/Alto Paranaíba. The research will seek to identify and interpret the main natural, geo-economic and political/institutional factors that confer competitiveness to the agents of the productive space circuit of the sugarcane industry. Therefore, we propose to evaluate the main technical-scientific and regulatory demands and the social and environmental implications of the expansion of globalized scientific farming of sugarcane, from a study on the municipality of Uberaba/MG. The proposal is justified by the fact that large areas of the Brazilian territory have been intensively occupied by or converted to sugarcane plantations to meet the strong demand of ethanol, sugar and bioelectricity markets, a process that has favored the increase of forms of accumulation by dispossession/spoliation, especially since 2003, when the sugar-energy industry became highly controlled by large groups of national and transnational companies.
