Abstract

Cryptosporidiosis is a severe enteric disease, responsible for intestinal disorders, especially in young ruminants, with varied clinical manifestations and eventual mortality. The present research project has the goal of evaluating occurrence, as well as genetically characterizing, Cryptosporidium infections in Brazilian wildlife deer. Presence of such protozoan's oocysts in cervid fecal samples will be observed by negative staining with malachite green and phase contrast microscopy in Sheather solution. Genomic DNA of each fecal sample will be extracted, allowing amplification of the parasite's DNA (gene 18S RNA and GP 60) by means of polymerase chain reaction (nested-PCR). Positive samples regarding Cryptosporidium spp. DNA will be sequenced, enabling molecular characterization of this coccidian. Statistical analysis will consist of the Chi-Square test, to verify the association of the aforementioned enteroparasite related to the origin of fecal samples. (AU)
