Abstract

Background: Ingrown toenails or onychocryptosis, when associated to a recurrent or painful condition, are frequently surgically treated and the main technique utilized is matricectomy. The main immediate post-operatory complications described are: infection of the surgical site and, less frequently, bruising and dehiscence of the stitches. We lack national and international studies about these immediate complications of the matricectomy, as well as their risk factors. In this study we intend to observe the incidence of post-operatory complications in onychocryptosis correction surgeries and to identify the possible relations between sociodemographic, clinical and surgical factors, as risk factors for complications. Method: A cohort and analytical study with patients undergoing surgical removal of skin matricectomy by the Department of Dermatology, Hospital of the Medical School of Botucatu - UNESP. We will study sociodemographic, clinical and surgical post-operatory variables (utilization of systemic or topic antibiotics, pain, bleeding, utilization of painkillers or antiinflammatory, hospitalization, degree of satisfaction, infection, erythema, necrosis, total or partial dehiscence and global evaluation of the scar's aspect). The patients included in this study will be analyzed in the 7th and 14th days after surgery. Categorical data will be represented by their percentages and continued data will be represented by their central tendencies and dispersion measures, adequate for each distribution. Subgroups will be compared by logistic regression. The magnitude of association is measured by the odds ratio and confidence interval of 95%. The sample size pre-test will be conducted with 40 cases, in order to estimate a standard error of + / - 5% of the estimated incidence of complications.
