Abstract

This project focuses on the History of education's intellectuals: formative period, sociabilities, action and ideas; taking by its main object the intellectual making of nineteenth century Amazon - José Veríssimo (1877-1892). José Veríssimo was a key-character both in a local and in a national level, having assumed his place as a social thinker of history, culture, literature and education. The researching process selects, in the vast intellectual production of aforementioned author, his works on journals and magazines, international academic events (Portugal, 1880, and France, 1889) as well as his role as the headmaster of Colégio Americano (1884-1888), period in which he lived in the State of Pará (1877-1891). This temporal section is plausible due to the "biographic silence" surrounding the historic, ethnographic and educational works of José Veríssimo made while he was in Pará - which focused on Amazonia in the Brazilian background; this period was commonly established as a "key of interpretation" of his works - a distinction between his provincial phase (body of work created in Pará) and national phase (body of work created in Rio de Janeiro). The second phase elevated him as a mature intellectual, critic and literature historian, overshadowing his excellent works on ethnography, history of Amazonia and education. The main purpose of this work is to analyze the locus of production through social experiences, sociability webs and circulation of the emerging social and educational thinking of José Veríssimo and his constitution as an Amazonian intellectual. The analytical background of this work uses the categories: social and cultural practice - social and educational thinking - circulation: social and cultural practice - organic intellectual - culture organizer (GRAMSCI, 2001), experience - "making oneself" (THOMPSON, 1981;1987), sociability webs and itinerary (SIRINELLI, 2003), social locus of production (CERTEAU, 1982); social and educational thinking - representation (CHARTIER, 1990); cultural repertoire (ALONSO, 2002); circulation - circulation (GRUZINSKY. 2001a; 2001b).Keywords: Amazonia intellectual; Locus of production; Social and educational thinking.
