Abstract

The upper limb is an arrangement of segments and joints that operate in a synchronized manner to carry out the activities of daily living. Injury or trauma affecting the upper limbs often generates functional disabilities to the individual. The wrist joint is essential, especially for carrying out fine movements with the fingers. The loss of wrist extension movement leads to increased use of more proximal joints like the shoulder. As the upper limb function also depends on the proper functioning of these joints, this compensatory stress can bring compensations during motion. The orthoses are devices that provide proper alignment of a body segment, statically or dynamically, and are an important complement in the rehabilitation process. Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of static orthosis in the shoulder biomechanics in normal subjects during a functional task with the use of orthoses in different angles. Methodology: The range of motion and muscle activation will be analyzed from objective measures found in the kinematic and electromyography, respectively, during the course of the functional task. The chosen task comes from a function test: Elui test that assess simulate ordinary tasks of everyday life and it is easy to apply. The task will be carried out under different conditions: with no orthoses, with static orthoses in a neutral position, with 15 degrees of flexion and 30 of extension. RESULTS: The expected results are that the different orthoses conditions will increase compensatory muscle activity and the shoulder range of motion. Furthermore, it is expected that the static orthoses with 30o of extension bring minor compensations than other conditions.
