Evaluation of cytotoxicity and mutagenicity of extracts methanolic and ethanolic of Cymbopogon citratus in mice inoculated with Ehrlich tumor

Abstract

The use of medicinal plants has been increasing, as the population searches for natural alternatives to the treatment of diseases and a better quality of life. Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) is a kind of most commonly used lemon balm in Brazilian folk medicine. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the potential cytotoxic, in Ehrlich tumor cells, and mutagenic, of ethanolic and methanolic extracts of C. citratus, in vivo. It will be used mice inoculated with Ehrlich ascites tumor cytotoxicity for analysis by blue exclusion method Trypan, mutagenicity the micronucleus test in bone marrow cells of rodents and comet assay, besides tumor growth analysis. The in vivo test, will receive the following treatments / experimental groups: 1) Negative Control Healthy (healthy animals without tumor Ehrlich, without extracts administration); 2) Negative Control Tumor (animals with Ehrlich tumor, without extracts administration); 3) Positive Control Tumor (animals with Ehrlich tumor and inducing damage agent administration); 4) Animals with tumor Ehrlich + C. citratus ethanol extract administration; 5) animals with tumor Ehrlich + C. citratus methanol extract of administration. Thus, allowing verification of cytotoxicity and mutagenicity of these extracts in vivo.
