Abstract

This research has as central hypothesis claiming that narratives, as discursive skills, serve individuals to improve their cognition of "normative dilemmas". To understand or develop sensitivity about a normative dilemma is an operation which is part of normative cognition in general (how the individuals understand the content of the norms, when a norm should be followed or not, when a norm can be considered legitimate or not and, finally, how norms can be created or changed). A normative dilemma happens when the understanding, or the evaluation of a norm by one or more characters, in their interactions within the narrative structures, are faced to consider the understanding or evaluation of the requirements of other social systems (economic, cultural or personal) that limit and confront the normative systems (sets of norms, institutions or open formal agreements).
