Abstract Elmidae is one of the most diverse and widespread families of aquatic beetles, comprising approximately 1300 species in 146 genera. Their greatest diversity is found in mountain streams of tropical and subtropical regions. Both Elmidae larvae and adults are aquatic and the family is divided into two subfamilies, Larainae and Elminae, which is the richest one. Hexacylloepus Hinton, 1940 is an Elminae genus that was created based on internal anatomy observations of species formerly described as Cylloepus Erichson, 1847. Hexacylloepus is morphologically characterized by elongated subparallel body and pronotum with a longitudinal inpression on the disc. Elytra punctuado and striate, with two sublateral carinae on each elytron. The prosternum is long; the mesosternum presents a deep and moderately narrow depression and the metasternum a longitudinal and median printed line. Hexacylloepus has 21 species and two subspecies and occurs mainly in the Neotropics region, up to southern United States. Unfortunately, the group remained forgotten for many years and no species of the genus has been described since the 70´s. For this reason, the group's taxonomy is outdated and there are no keys to identify species of this genus. To fulfill such knowledge gap, our aim is to review the Hexacylloepus genus and create a key to identify its species. For this, we will analyse the material obtained from previous samplings from different Brazilian regions and national and international collections. (AU) | |
