Abstract

In this research we examine the presence of reason and sentiment at the origin of moral judgments, as this problem is addressed by David Hume. By the comparison of his two major works on morality - Book III of the Treatise of Human Nature and An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals - we intend to verify the consistency of the human thought on this subject. Despite the remarkable soundness of his philosophy, it is possible to identify some alterations between the two objects, both published about a decade apart. Our task therefore will be to examine the origin of the different sorts of virtues and vices discussed in both works, find the changes regarding the presence of reason and sentiment, and reflect upon the meaning of these alterations.
