Abstract

Brazil has one of the world's greatest cattle herd, with over than 20 million animals. In Brazil, the intensive system, or feedlot, is used only in the final phase, for a 90-day time. Despite of the short feedlot period, animals might be under stress, and this may cause damages to their welfare, to the carcasses and meat quality. This study aims to establish a morphological and morphometric pattern of the familiar and unfamiliar crossbred cattle's adrenal gland in feedlot and check if those animals may go through changes in the cortical and medullar layers of the adrenal gland, which is responsible for the hormone production related to stress. Adrenals will be fixed with Bouin solution and longitudinally sectioned. With the help of a software and digitizer tablet, measurements will be taken in the gland's longitudinal and median transversal axes, besides the cortical and medullar areas. (AU)
