Abstract

The city of Limeira leads the national ranking of plated jewelry industries concentration. The electroplating is part of jewelry manufacturing process and causes the elimination of numerous toxic substances on the sewage sludge and waste waters. Taking into account the outsourcing practices and informality adopted in Limeira's productive arrangement, raises a concern for the environmental impact of sanitary sewer. The aims of this study are: a) to analyze sanitary sewer PTEs concentrations (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Hg, Pb, Zn and Sn) in the city of Limeira - SP, considering an area with a high number of families working at home with the jewelry manufacture compared to control areas and b) assess the presence/concentration of PTEs in sanitary sewage, treated waste waters and sewage sludge of treatment plants and check compliance with the current legislation. The sanitary sewer samples will be collected in five manholes of three different city areas during a rainy month and a dry month; furthermore, the sewage sludge and treated waste water will be collected in two waste water treatment plants. The collection procedure will follow the steps indicated by the Environmental Agency of São Paulo State (CETESB). The determination of PTEs will be performed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The mercury concentration will be analyzed in Flow Injection Mercury System (FIMS). Descriptive analysis, correlation test and ANOVA will be applied to the data (p<0.05). (AU)
