Abstract

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a psychiatric disorder that affects nearly 1% of the general population, with onset usually in the first decades of life and characterized by episodes of manic or hypomanic mood. The emotional and financial costs for families and for society as a whole are enormous. The main biological factor for the onset of TB is its genetic component (more than 70% of the variance for developing TB is assigned to the hereditary component). More recently it has been investigated the length of telomeres in individuals with TB, but studies are still limited in number and overall the results are inconclusive. The present research investigation will seek to contribute in this area investigating telomere length in Family members with and without TB. It will also assess the relationship between telomere length and clinical characteristics of individuals with TB (number of manic, depressive episodes, etc.). Finally, it will investigate whether in affected individuals, the use of lithium has any effect on telomere length between those who use this medication or not.
