Abstract

A large number of organisms exhibit properties of technical and economic interest. Among them, we highlight an aquatic plant named Nelumbo nucifera, popularly known as Lotus Flower and eternally admired for their superhydrofobic properties resulting from their high surface roughness. Inspired by the elegant Lotus structure, various methods have been proposed for obtaining superhydrofobic surfaces. However, basically all developed methods show technical and/or economic limitations. The layer-by-layer deposition (LbL) is a versatile, low-cost technique used for producing various types of coatings. The LbL is based in the alternately deposition of polyelectrolytes, inorganic particles or macromolecules of opposite charges on electrostatically charged substrates. Surfaces with controlled roughness can be obtained by the alternately deposition of polyelectrolyte and inorganic nanoparticles, making this system as an interesting alternative to mimic the lotus structure. So, this project focus in the development of superhydrofobic coatings via layer-by-layer deposition of polyelectrolites and inorganic nanoparticles using dip coating and spray coating techniques.
