Abstract

Artificial dams have become increasingly common in rivers worldwide. About two-thirds of the major rivers of the world have dammed portions. The dammed areas are important as water supply for agriculture and domestic uses, and electricity generation. However, such changes cause a number of impacts to riverine ecosystems. Damming in urban areas may be even more striking because the urbanization itself generates impacts to aquatic environment, resulting in the "urban stream syndrome". The objective of this project is to document the changes in species composition and functional diversity of the fish fauna in an urban dam, considering the period of 13 years. For this, the samples obtained in 2002 and 2003 in an urban dam in the municipality of São José do Rio Preto will be compared with the current samples.
