Abstract

This research aims a study of the irony in the epistolary novel The Screwtape Letters (1942), by Clive Staples Lewis. The main objective of this project is to seek ironic elements in the novel, and to identify their functions and contribution for the making of the narrator Screwtape's rethoric and satiric discourse and the British author's criticism. Therefore, theoretical books will be used for this research, such as Irony's edge: the theory and politics of irony (2000), by Linda Hutcheon, Irony and the ironic (1995), by Douglas Collins Muecke, A ironia e suas refrações: um estudo sobre a dissonância na paródia e no riso (2009), by Camila da Silva Alavarce, Satire (1980), by Arthur Pollard, and other texts relating to irony and C. S. Lewis's literary production.
