Abstract

The proposal is to investigate the relationship between boredom and novelistic fiction by considering subject, textual elements, historical and contemporary issues concerning the novel as a literary genre. Boredom acquires here more than one sense: it serves as a counterpart to the ideological entertainment often associated with literary experience; it gives shape to form and specific temporalities of the novel; it is a thematic field mainly present from 19th century novels onwards. The objective is to establish a theoretical framework by investigating one constitutive aspect of the novel therefore proper to its comprehension and reading.
