Abstract Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the second most common salivary gland tumor and the most frequent malignant tumor. The clinical presentation is variable and can show a well defined swelling as well as more aggressive behavior. The histopathologic features can be considered as low, intermediate or high grade, which might interfere in prognosis. Some others pathologies can show the same aspects as high grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma, therefore the diagnosis becomes challenging. About one-third of whole mucoepidermoid carcinomas demonstrate a specific translocation t(11;19)(q21;p13) named MECT1-MAML2. This translocation is associated with many pathways responsible for cell proliferation and differentiation. Some studies show that the presence of the translocation can guarantee better prognosis and outcomes. Moreover, other groups present proteins from PLUNC family as important markers for mucoepidermoid carcinomas. In this study we will evaluate the presence of translocation MECT1-MAML2 and the influence on expression of PLUNCs and on the tumor's grade. This study aims to bring new prospective about diagnosis, prognosis and important mechanisms for target therapy. | |
