Abstract

The electrocardiogram (ECG) is widely used in Veterinary Medicine to evaluate the electrical activity of the heart. The ECG recording may differ due the variety of dimensions and conformations of the chest in dogs, without the indication of cardiac disorders. The heart size, in relation to the dog dimensions, is an important variable that must be considered on the ECG analysis. In dogs, the increase in the heart chambers can produce increase of the amplitude and / or duration of the ECG waves, beyond to the reference values. Among the different methods of assessing the size of the heart, the Vertebral Heart Size (VHS) is one of the most used. The VHS and the chest measurements, both obtained by simple radiographs, may provide relevant information when assessing the ECG. Accordingly, the ECG, VHS and thoracic morphometry will be evaluated to establish possible relationships between these variables in healthy dogs. (AU)
