Abstract

Pathogen research on wild animals has great value due to threats experienced by these species and their risk of extinction. Zoonotic importance of primates is relevant regarding the phylogenetic proximity and issues relating to public health. Habitat fragmentation, increased contact between domestic animals, human and non-human primates may favor the emergence of zoonotic diseases. The Golden-headed Lion Tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysomelas) is classified as "Endangered" by the IUCN red list and endemic of Bahia state, Brazil. About a decade ago, some L. chrysomelas individuals were freed in an Atlantic Forest fragment, municipality of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro state. These individuals have reproduced, becoming hundreds of animals having the local human population as their neighborhood. Thus, the present study aims to carry out serological survey and search for pathogens relevant in this interface between these animals and the local human population. The selected pathogens are hepatitis E virus (Hepeviridae), rotaviruses, noroviruses and Leptospira bacteria. We believe that the results derived from this study will bring important contributions to the understanding of the risks due to this interface to animal and public health. (AU)
