Abstract

Self-harm has been investigated in other countries, who seek not only the prevalence but also a broader investigation of the matter. In Brazil there are no studies evaluating incidence and prevalence of cases of self-harm. This may be due to the fact it is a controversial subject still little discussed among professionals of both human and health sciences. Although, in social networks and professional reports, mainly from psychology area, we realized evidence that this behavior is also carried out by young Brazilians, and so the need to reflect on the subject and research to investigate the prevalence and their meanings. This study aims to analyze the feelings, the pain and reasons related to practice self-harm in young people. For this qualitative research will be conducted from interviews semi-structured with youth aged 18 to 29, who practice or have already practiced self-harm. All interviews will be transcribed, organized by content analysis and interpreted using the theoretical referential of psychoanalysis. With this research we seek to contribute studies of self-harm and understand the feelings, the pain and reasons relating to self-mutilation. Thus aiming to further contribute to the reflections on treatment and prevention of this practice.
