Abstract

Adventure Tourism refers to tourism movements derived from the practice of non-competitive recreational adventure activities. Brazil, due its great natural diversity, has become an important destination for adventure activities and attracted many international tourists. In order to qualify and stimulate this sector, the Brazilian Tourism Department, in association with ABNT (Technical Standards Brazilian Association), promoted the creation of a variety of technical standards aimed at regulating Tourism services, becoming an international reference. The study and organization of the terminology related to adventure activities are very important to improve communication and information interchange among professionals, entrepreneurs, and international organizations. As part of a wider project, aimed at creating a Trilingual Dictionary of Adventure Tourism (Portuguese-English-Spanish), the objective of this research is to search for the equivalents in English of a set of terms relating to equipment’s and safety devices. The research involves the domains of Terminology, Bilingual Terminology, Corpus Linguistics and Adventure Tourism. In relation to theoretical fundamentals and methodology, we follow Socioterminology (FAULSTICH, 2006; GAUDIN, 1993) and Terminology Communicative Theory (CABRÉ, 1999) concepts. The terms to be included in the glossary have already been collected and registered in terminological records. The search for terms, definitions, contexts and equivalents in English will be based on works on Adventure Tourism originally written in English and by means of the software Word Smith Tools.
