Abstract

The development of autonomous vehicles has been studied since the 80s This technology can help in reducing road accidents, improving the mobility of disabled and elderly people, besides several other important contributions. Despite its importance and the large attention that this topic has been receiving from researchers, thisproblem still presents many challenges and open issues due its high complexity. Usually the urban space has several visual signs that indicate standards of conduct. For an autonomous vehicle to safely navigate in this scenario, it must recognize the street where can travel and recognize these signs. Since the development of a fully autonomous vehicle is still a big challenge, this research project proposes to developa recognition system of semantic information in urban environments.Both LRM and INRIA groups have been obtaining highly relevant results that topic, as well as in other areas related to the development of autonomous vehicles. In particular, INRIA is one of the most reputable research institutes in the field of autonomous vehicles and computer vision. This research proposal will allow an exchange of experience between groups aswell as increase the international insertion of the Brazilian group expanding and strengthening their current research lines.
