Evaluation of nandrolone decanoate in alveolar bone loss due to experimental periodontitis: a study in rats

Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of nandrolone decanoate on bone loss in the furcation region of the 1st lower molar in Wistar rats subjected to experimental periodontits due to subgingival insertion of ligatures. Thirty rats were randomly divided into 3 groups. Test group (n = 10) animals received intramuscular injections of nandrolone decanoate (5mg / kg), 2 times per week for 30 days and concurrently the first dose, the animals received unilateraly a subgingivl cotton segment in a first molarrandomly chosen with the purpose of developing periodontitis. Sham control group (n = 10) animals received intramuscular injections of propylene glycol (0.2 ml / kg), 2 times a week for 30 days and, concomitantly with the first administration the animals recieved unilaterally a cotton segment placed subgingivally on a 1 lower molar chosen at random. Negative control group (n = 10) animals received unilateral insertion of a cotton in a lower first molar randomly chosen. The animals were sacrificed on the 30th day of the experiment by decapitation after deepening of anesthesia. The following parameters will be evaluetad histometric: 1. inter-radicular alveolar bone loss at the furcation; 2 TRAP positive cells in the remaining bone crest (linear measurement in mm).
