Abstract

We intend in this study to develop a comparative analysis between the Brazilian teacher unionism and French teacher unionism during the 1990s. Despite the historical, socioeconomic and cultural particularity between the countries, teaching unions experienced a general crisis in the West in their organization and ways of working. The introduction of neo-liberal content of reforms such as the privatization of education and the adoption of precarious forms of employment and stay at work resulted in challenges for union organization of teachers. Thus, we intend to identify the main trends that the teaching unions crisis, forms of organization and mobilization in a context of flow of activities and mass protests of teachers. Furthermore, we aim to raise the mainstream interpretation of the teaching unions trajectory in Brazil and in France, especially in the Brazilian case, the APEOESP unions (Teachers Union of Official Education of the State of São Paulo - Basic Education) , the ADUNESP (Union of UNESP of teachers, the ADUSP (USP teachers 'Union) and ADUNICAMP (UNICAMP teachers' Union - the three organizations representing the staff unions of the São Paulo public universities) and in the French case, the SNES (Syndicat National des Enseignements of Second Degré - representing secondary school teachers), the SENESup (Syndicat National de l'Enseignement Supérieur - higher education).
