Abstract

The genus Macrocoeloma Miers, 1879 currently comprises 13 species and it is endemic of the Americas, found in both the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean. Recent phylogenetic analyses based on molecular data propose that Macrocoeloma does not belong to Mithracidae and placed as incerta sedis in Majoidea. The Brazilian coast is an important area of occurrence of this genus, where eight of the 13 known species are found, inhabiting the intertidal areas of rocky or coral reefs.The doubts about the systematic, such as relationship with other majoideans and the monophyly of the genus, and the absence of a complete revision about the genus emphasize the necessity of this project. Thus, the objectives of this work are: (I) perform a phylogenetic analysis containing all Macrocoeloma species, combining morphological and molecular data; (II) a taxonomic revision of Macrocoeloma based on the phylogenetic analyses; (III) assign a taxonomic position of the genus in Majoidea, since it is currently in the condition of incerta sedis; (IV) identify possible complex of species and seek characters that help in their separation.
