Translation and knowledge transfer: the directions of the translations and returns to the German-speaking public of Sigmund Freud's work after its entry into the public domain in 2010

Abstract

This research, which institutionally aims mainly to strengthen the bounds of cooperation between the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Língua e Literatura Alemã [Post-Graduation in German Studies] of the University of São Paulo - USP and the Zentrum für Literatur- und Kulturforschung Berlin - Germany, is an interdisciplinary work between Translation Studies, Psychoanalysis and Cultural Studies. Despite the huge criticism that weighs on the indirect translations currently available in Portuguese, Sigmund Freud, founder of psychoanalysis, is the most widely read and studied German-speaking author in Brazil. Those problematic indirect versions caused a significant impact on the reception of his work in our country during the second half of the twentieth century. However, since we saw his work go into the public domain after 2010, there are currently three different ongoing translation projects, renewing thus the debate about the possible directions of its reception for the twenty-first century. Being a unique author, Freud has had his reception linked to Literature, Medicine, Philosophy, Psychology and other intellectual fields, according to each translation direction he has been inserted into in each language and country. Our goal, based on theories of Translation Descriptive Studies (Toury, Even-Zohar, Venuti et al.) and the reflections by Vilém Flusser, will be to analyze the translation directions currently being taken and to propose possible policies lines that are more integrate with Freud's invention: psychoanalysis.
