Abstract

Non-equilibrium processing (NEP) of metallic alloys has been target of scientific investigation and technological developments to obtain metallic alloys with amorphous, quasi-crystalline and nano-sized microstructures (AQN) by combining specific compositions and high cooling rates. Due to their higher corrosion and wear properties, these metallic alloys can be used in many technological applications, such as alternative coatings in components from the petrochemical industry. Currently, the increasing connections between science and societal needs/business interests (specially technologies) has turned scientific activities more complex, team-based and interdisciplinary. To support science policy, technological forecasting and research management, advanced bibliometric indicators, methods and tools are emerging to deal with this challenging task of measuring the process of knowledge creation and use. This research project aims at investigating the dynamic relationship and impact of research areas associated to NEP used to produce coatings of AQN metallic alloys. It will measure and characterize relevant scientific research areas associated to these manufacturing process, study the knowledge flow from science to technology, and the potential use in science policy, S&T monitoring assessments. An internship at the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS), Leiden University, the Netherlands will provide access to their interesting classification systems, patent databases as well as tools achieve these targets. Dr. Ed Noyons is an expert on science and technology mapping and this interaction will bring substantial contribution to the current postdoc research in development by the candidate.
