Abstract

The goal of this project is to analyze object relative clauses in Karitiana, a Tupian language of the Arikém family. Relative clauses in this language are internally-headed and object relatives specifically show an inverse voice morpheme, which also marks some wh- constructions in the language. Additionally, object relative clauses have two possible word orders: SOV and OSV. This project intends to investigate both the inverse morpheme {ti-} and the word order variation inside relative clauses. In order to clarify these two topics, we will search for the relevant structures in spontaneous data and we will also develop controlled elicitation protocols to be carried out with native speakers.
