Abstract

The Universidade de São Paulo and the Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie belong to the most prestigious universities of higher education in São Paulo, when you look at legal education. This project will investigate possible similarities and the particularities between these two academic worlds, regarding the legal excellence propagated in their academic programs and the social recruitment of your students. The differences since the creation of USP and Mackenzie - starting from the fact that the first one is secular and public, and the second is confessional and private - have become more evident when both universities shared the sidewalks of Rua Maria Antonia, in a particularly critical moment of the country's history. This rivalry culminated in the "Batalha da Maria Antonia", during the military dictatorship, in that moment the students of the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of USP were against the dictatorship, while the students of Mackenzie supported that. With knowledge of this historical difference, the principal point of this research is investigate the persistence of social, cultural and ideological differences, by the comparative study of the definitions of legal excellence and the social recruiting existent in law courses at USP and Mackenzie. The study of the ideals of their legal training will be done primarily through the academic programs taught at both institutions. The analysis of thematic hierarchies that we can observe in their curriculum will be completed by the titles and area of law of TCCs defended in the second half of 2015. In the second line of this research, dedicated to the research of social recruitment of the students, we will apply questionnaires into four classes of first year of college, one at morning and another at night in each of these two universities. If the law schools of Brazil were originally created to serve our elite, it is expected with this research to investigate if they are still, today, the major social profile of graduates of this course in both institutions, or, on the other hand, the recruitment is, now, more socially heterogeneous in one or in both Universities.
