Abstract

The Caatinga has been disputed by different actors over time. The interaction between these actors at multiple levels of social organization, has promoted a reinterpretation of its importance, changing the way of thinking and acting on it. This was only possible because there have been disputes their interests and producing conflicts around their appropriation, which has been negotiated to achieve a common goal. This project focuses on the possibility of observing the arenas configuration around the Caatinga, where the interests and disputes between the different actors at multiple levels of social organization (local, regional, national, international) interfere with its conservation. In this scenario, some questions arises: (i) why an environment seen historically as hostile, placed as a major factor for the cause of social problems such as poverty, has been valued by different social and institutional actors restructuring so arenas around the conservation of Caatinga? (ii) which conflicts are now displayed in the arenas? (iii) which resources are mobilized by the actors in their disputes and conflicts to influence decision-making processes? (iv) what consequences the conflicts between the actors of the arena bring to the conservation of Caatinga? To answer these questions, this project will be based on methodologies from the social sciences in a multi-method approach to data collection. The analysis of the results is based on the view that conflicts are inherent in society and has positive attributes, as opposed to the conflict perspective as a social anomaly. This research search understand if the conservation of Caatinga is a place of possibilities for transformation in the semiarid region. (AU)
