Abstract

The main goal of this project is to understand the functioning and the organization of the Permanent Municipal Guard e of the Police Guards in the São Paulo province from 1834 to 1850. The starting point is connected with the promulgation of the Addictional Act that foresaw administrative freedom to the provincial government with regard to policing. The end, 1850, concur with the reform to provide more control of command posts of the National Guard by the provincial authorities, besides of being usually a moment of consolidation of the imperial project. Accordingly, we are going to understand the police organization and action of the Guards inside the province of São Paulo, looking into the configurations and the political disputes between provincial center and its other municipalities. Besides that, we propose to insert the action of the studied institutions in the scenario of state building, paying attention to the relationship and the possible conflicts with others institutions linked to the police and judicial scope, such as the population itself.
