Abstract

Experimental realization of Dirac and Weyl semimetals in 2014 has increased the interest on the topic. Equivalently to graphene, these materials are characterized by massless quasiparticles which are described by the Weyl Hamiltonian. Such equation admits chiral modes when subjected to an external magnetic field, which are responsible for the so-called chiral anomaly at low energies. The transport signature of the chiral anomaly refers to an enhancement of longitudinal conductivity in the presence of magnetic field, $\delta \sigma_{zz}\sim B^2$. Weyl and Dirac semimetals are examples of a wider class, called chiral materials.We aim in this proposal to use topological properties to seek for novel universal effects in transport, combining the hydrodynamic and kinetic theory approaches with topological methods. These methods are also known to describe the properties of gapless materials which are robust with respect to the interaction strength. The two research directions of this project refer to topological and transport properties of Fermi arcs and non-Fermi liquid behavior in chiral materials. (AU)
