Abstract

This project discuss the phenomena of memory and identity regarding their social conditions. We propose a theoretical discussion on the "theory of collective memory" by Maurice Halbwachs and the "theory of the self" by George H. Mead in order to develop an integrated theoretical framework to deal with both phenomena, since the philosophical literature signs their mutual dependence. This discussion will both illuminate and be illuminated by the collection and analysis of mnemonic narratives of former internals of an institution that houses abandoned children and teenagers in conflict with the law: the former Institute of Batatais Minor and later Educational Unit EU4 / FEBEM. There is a recent coexistence of two different groups of former internals that meet annually and have separate virtual groups where they share experiences and memories. Through the collection of these reports, in three levels (in-depth interview, spontaneous reports at annual meetings and virtual communication), we seek to analyze how works the relationship between memory and identity in individuals who do not have two elements, pointed by the literature as fundamental to the construction and consolidation of memory and identity: the presence of the family group and the living situations of violence (AU)
