The deceased don't all weight the same: a reflection on the political identification of bones from the Perus mass grave

Abstract

In 1990, was found in Perus cemetery, in São Paulo, a clandestine mass grave where may have been buried those who suffered political deaths and disappearances during the last brazilian Dictatorship (1964-1985). After 26 years, the identification of the bones found in this grave is still one of the most personal and sensitive demands among families of the political disappeared and, at the same time, a important point in a public reparation program that aims to recognize the state's responsibility for the violence occurred in the recent past, in accordance with the standards of International Human Rights Law. This research seeks to understand the bones identification process, thinking over the link between these two dimensions. In light of this, it turns to the activities of Perus Working Group (Grupo de Trabalho Perus - GTP), the multidisciplinary team appointed to this task, with the aim to understand the acts, proceedings, and practices by wich GTP assigns a political identity to certain of those bones, and how this overall process, bearing in mind human rights state policies in wich the identifying process is placed in, inscribe (certain) individuals experiences in the collective memory.
