Abstract

LIBS has been demonstrated a useful tool for analyses of different materials, whichever is your physical state, solid, liquid or gas. Among the main advantages, it can be mentioned the unnecessary sample treatment, multielementar character and possibility of remote analysis. This project is aimed at studying fundamental aspects on high pressure LIBS to provide analytical support for sending probes in exploratory missions in deep sea and Venus. Specifically, it is planned to study the effects of both the particulate matter (metallic sulfides, for example) from hydrothermal vents on the LIBS signals and the supercritical CO2 on the formation and extinction of the plasma and emission lines generated by rocks and minerals. The simulated laboratory conditions must be the more realistic as possible, in order to guarantee that quantitative results can be obtained with accuracy. From the point of view of instrumentation, aspects related to the development of measuring cells suitable for high pressure and high temperature as well as measurements in supercritical CO2 will be concerned; in addition, the optimization of the experimental set-up suitable to be launched in a Remotely Operated Vehycle (ROV) will be also considered.
